Way of St. James by bike - Day by day

Day 1: Individual travel to Pamplona

Day 2: Pamplona – Estella

In the morning you will have enough time to explore the old historic city center. Then, the first part of your cycling trip will lead you from Pamplona, to Puente la Reina, and then to Estella with its beautiful old town and many interesting churches (Ca. 46km).

Day 3: Estella – Logroño
Shortly after leaving Estella, you pass famous monastery Irache where water and wine flow from the tap for the tired pilgrim. Here, you may take a sip before continuing your journey. Cycling through the winery's vineyards you pass beautiful villages like Los Arcos, Torres del Río, and Viana until you reach Logroño situated in the La Rioja wine country (ca. 60 km).

Day 4: Logroño – Santo Domingo – Burgos
Today the path leads you again through beautiful vineyards to Santo Domingo de la Calzada (ca. 57 km), a place where legend and reality coincide. Walking inside the cathedral you will notice a curiosity: a cage containing a living rooster and a hen. Their presence recall the so-called “miracle of the cock and the hen”. In the afternoon transfer to Burgos, once residence of the Kings of Spain and one of the most significant locations to the pilgrims on the Way of St. James.

Castrojeriz

Day 5: Burgos – Castrojeriz
While cycling through Castilian's high plateau with its wide open spaces, today's path leads you from Burgos to the idyllically situated village Castrojeríz.(ca. 54 km).

Day 6/1: Castrojeriz – Carrión – León
Cycling through wide fields and meadows, you pass picturesque Frómista until you get to Carrión de los Condes. (ca. 48 km). In the afternoon transfer to Leon with its splendid cathedral. Note for travelers of the 9 day cycle trip: This is your first day! You arrive in León.

Day 7/2: León – Astorga
 Today the path leads you to Astorga (ca. 54km). Its mayor attractions are the Episcopal Palace of Astorga built by Antonio Gaudí, the city's elaborate town hall, and last but not least Astorga's fine chocolateries.

Day 8/3: Astorga – Molinaseca
After cycling through tiny villages and moorland where heather grows on both sides of the path, the road leads you to the Rabanal pass with its famous pilgrim's monument “Cruz de Hierro” on top of the mountain. Then, the road basically goes downhill for the rest of today's cycle trip until you reach Molinaseca, a beautiful mountain village with its famous Roman stone bridge, which has been used by pilgrims for centuries. (ca. 44 km).

Day 9/4: Molinaseca – O´Cebreiro
Leaving Molinaseca, you soon enter Ponferrada (with its famous castle of the Knights Templers) before cycling through the beautiful vineyards of the region El Bierzo, until you reach the old Celtic settlement up in the Galician mountains O´Cebreiro (ca. 65 km).

Day 10/5: O´Cebreiro – Portomarín
Surrounded by high mountains that shine yellow or lilac from flowers and broom and  change their colors with the season, the road leads you downhill to Triacastela, then further to Sárria and Portomarín (ca. 60 km).

Day 11/6: Portomarín – Arzúa
Today, you may prefer to leave the St. James' Way, and cycle on minor roads through the beautiful, green hills until  Arzúa (ca. 58 km).

Day 12/7: Arzúa – Santiago de Compostela
The last part of the cycling tour leads you through hilly Galicia on minor roads until you reach the pilgrims' destination: Santiago de Compostela (ca. 52 km).

Day 13/8: Santiago de Compostela
Day without any planned activities: Enjoy a day in one of Spain's most famous towns, and walk through the narrow alleys of Santiago's historic city center with its old stone buildings, bars, and restaurants. Have a café con leche in one of the bars and watch the pilgrims coming in. Don't forget to see St. James' cathedral with its huge thurible, the “botafumeiro”.

Day 14/9: Individual departure
